The Charging Habits That Are Quietly Killing Your E-Trike Battery

Every few weeks, someone writes in asking why their battery isn't doing what it used to — fewer bars, shorter rides, the trike suddenly acting tired halfway through a loop that used to be routine. Almost every time, the answer isn't a bad battery. It's a battery that's been charged the same convenient way for a year straight, and paid for it quietly, cycle after cycle.

That's not an argument against charging your trike — obviously you have to. It's the difference between charging it and babysitting it, and most riders have never been told there's a difference.

The short version, if you're mid-ride and just want the habit: plug in once the pack has cooled down, let daily charges land around 80–90% instead of a flat 100%, and never let it sit for weeks at either extreme. Everything below is the reasoning, the exceptions, and what to do if you suspect yours is already past saving.

Your Pack Is Aging Whether You Ride It or Not

Lithium batteries wear out two separate ways, and only one of them has anything to do with how much you actually ride.

The first is cycle aging — the wear from charging and discharging, over and over, mile after mile. This is the one everyone pictures: ride it hard enough, long enough, and eventually the pack gets tired. It's intuitive, and it's the reason range specs exist in the first place.

The second is calendar aging, and it's the one nobody warns you about. A battery loses capacity just sitting there, whether it's bolted to a trike in daily use or parked in a garage all winter. Time alone does some of the damage. How it's stored while that time passes does the rest — and that part is entirely within your control.

Most of the "it doesn't hold a charge like it used to" messages we get aren't from trikes with unusually high mileage. They're from batteries that spent a lot of quiet time sitting at 100%, or 0%, somewhere warm. The riding barely factored in.

One thing worth knowing: the percentage on your display isn't the pack's full physical range. The battery management system inside already holds back a buffer at both ends — the real 0% and real 100% are more extreme than anything you're ever shown. That buffer protects the cells from worst-case abuse. It doesn't protect them from you making a habit of living at the edges it does show you.

The Green Light Doesn't Mean Walk Away

Topping off overnight and leaving the charger plugged in until morning is just what charging looks like for most people. Nobody's ever told them there's a cost to it.

Here's the mechanism, in plain terms: a full charge holds the cells at their highest voltage, and higher voltage is what accelerates the slow, permanent loss of capacity inside a lithium pack. Sitting there for eight hours overnight — or worse, three days because the trike's parked until the weekend — adds up in a way a quick top-off before a ride doesn't.

This isn't a reason to panic about the charge you did last week. It's a reason to change the default. For a normal day — errands, a commute, a loop around the neighborhood — unplug somewhere around 80 to 90 percent and call it done. Save the full 100 for the day you're actually going to use it: a long weekend haul, opening day of a hunting trip, whatever your version of "I need everything the pack has" looks like. Charging to full once in a while is completely normal. Parking there for days at a time is the actual habit worth breaking.

Heat Does More Damage Than Any Hill You'll Climb

We're an LA company, so we'll say this from experience: a garage in July is not a neutral place to leave a battery. Neither is the bed of a truck at a trailhead at noon, and neither is a shed with a metal roof.

If you've read our piece on underinflated fat tires, heat's already a familiar villain — soft tires flex more, that flex builds heat, and heat wears the tire out faster than mileage alone ever would. The battery runs on the same principle, except the stakes are higher and the damage doesn't show up as a worn tread you can actually see.

Heat is the fastest way to age a lithium pack, full stop — faster than mileage, faster than rough terrain, faster than almost anything else you'll do to it. And the riskiest heat isn't ambient weather on its own. It's stacked heat: a battery that just finished a hard, loaded, hilly ride is already warm from the inside, and plugging it straight into a charger — especially somewhere hot — piles charging heat on top of riding heat before the pack has had any chance to settle.

Give it fifteen or twenty minutes after a hard ride before you plug in. It doesn't need to be cold, just not hot to the touch. And if you've got a choice between charging in a closed, sun-facing shed or somewhere shaded and ventilated, that's worth choosing every time, not just when it's convenient.

Cold Charging Breaks Something That Doesn't Come Back

The opposite problem shows up every winter. A trike's been sitting outside overnight, the pack is genuinely cold, and someone plugs it in first thing in the morning because that's when there's time.

Charging current pushed into very cold lithium cells can cause something called lithium plating — a buildup on the internal electrodes that permanently reduces how much charge the cell can ever hold again. Unlike most of the habits in this article, this one doesn't average out gradually over time. It's damage that happens in a single cold charge and stays.

The practical fix is almost embarrassingly simple: bring the battery inside and let it sit at room temperature for a while before you charge it. What "Storage" Actually Means for a Battery

Hunting season ends. Winter comes. Someone takes a two-month trip and the trike sits untouched in the garage the whole time. Whatever the reason, a battery about to sit unused for weeks deserves five minutes of thought before you walk away from it.

Don't leave it dead flat — a fully depleted pack sitting for a long stretch can drop low enough that the battery management system has real trouble waking it back up. Don't leave it fully charged either, for the same voltage-stress reasons covered above, except now there's no riding in between to offset it. Somewhere around 40 to 60 percent is the range that puts the least long-term stress on a resting pack.

Check on it every month or so if you can, and top it back up if it's drifted down — batteries self-discharge slowly even doing nothing at all. Keep it somewhere temperature-stable if you're able to. An unheated shed that swings from freezing overnight to well over 100°F in the afternoon sun is a rougher place to spend a winter than a closet inside the house.

The Charger Is Part of the Battery, Not Just an Accessory

It's tempting to grab whatever charger is closest, especially once there's more than one electric thing in the garage. Resist it. The charger that shipped with your LLAMA Trike is matched to that pack's voltage and its maximum safe charge current — that matching is doing real protective work every time you plug in.

A mismatched charger, especially a cheap aftermarket one pushing more current than the pack was designed for, trades a faster charge for more heat and more stress on exactly the cells you're trying to protect. If your original charger dies, replace it with the correct one for your model rather than whatever's cheapest online. It's not the exciting part of battery care, but it's one of the easiest mistakes to avoid entirely.

Two Batteries Means Two Batteries to Think About

If you're running one of LLAMA's dual-battery setups — the PT10's front and rear packs, for instance — the same rules apply, just doubled. The mistake specific to dual setups is treating one pack as the "main" battery and the other as backup: running one down consistently while the other sits fully charged and idle.

That's an easy way to end up with two packs aging at different rates. A year or two down the road you'll notice it as one side running out well before the other, even though the display insists they're both "full." Cycle them together, charge them together, and they'll wear together too.

Fast Charging Is a Tool, Not a Default

There's nothing wrong with using a fast charge when you genuinely need the trike ready in an hour instead of overnight — that's exactly what it's there for. The issue is when it quietly becomes the everyday setting because it's a few minutes faster and nobody thinks twice.

More current means more heat, and more heat means more of exactly the stress the rest of this article is about avoiding. Used now and then, it's a non-issue. Used as the default every single day, it adds up the same way constant 100% storage does — slowly, and in a way you won't notice until the range starts falling off faster than it should.

What This Actually Looks Like Day to Day

None of this needs to become a ritual. In practice it looks something like: roll the trike back into the garage, unload whatever cargo came with you, and by the time that's done the pack's usually cooled enough to plug in. Charge overnight or however long you'd normally leave it, and unplug in the morning rather than letting it sit there through the next day too. If tomorrow's ride needs everything the battery has, let it run to full the night before and don't think twice about it.

That's genuinely most of it. The habits that hurt a battery are rarely dramatic — nobody's doing anything that feels wrong in the moment. It's the accumulation of "it's fine, I'll unplug it later" that adds up over two or three years into a pack that used to get you thirty miles and now struggles past twenty.

How to Tell If Yours Is Already Wearing Out

A certain amount of capacity loss is normal — no lithium battery lasts forever, cared for or not. What you're watching for is the pace, and a few specific signs that it's time to plan ahead rather than wait for a full failure:

  • Noticeably less range at the same throttle and the same terrain you always ride
  • The pack running hot to the touch during a normal, non-fast charge
  • Power sagging under load — hills or hard acceleration feeling weaker than they used to
  • Any swelling, cracking, corrosion, or an unusual smell

The first three are ordinary aging, and they just mean it's a good time to start budgeting for a replacement pack rather than waiting for it to strand you somewhere. The last one is different — stop charging it and reach out to support before you use it again.

A Couple of Things Riders Always Ask

Does losing range in cold weather mean the battery's dying? Almost never. Lithium chemistry is genuinely less efficient in the cold — that's temporary and has nothing to do with long-term health. It comes back once temperatures do. The habits in this article cause permanent loss; cold weather causes temporary loss. Different problem entirely.

How long should a well-kept pack actually last? There's no single honest number — it depends on climate, how the trike gets used, and how closely someone actually follows habits like these. What we can say is that the gap between a battery that's been babied and one that's been neglected is large enough to matter, often the difference between replacing a pack once over the life of the trike and replacing it twice.

Is any of this trike-specific, or does it apply to my phone too? Same lithium chemistry as most of what you already own. The stakes are just higher here — a 48V pack costs a lot more to replace than a phone battery, and it's harder to shrug off reduced range on something you're relying on to actually get you places.

The Part That Actually Matters

None of this requires new tools, new habits worth dreading, or spending a dime. It's unplugging a little earlier most days, letting a hot pack cool before it goes on the charger, warming a cold one before it does, and not leaving it parked at either extreme for weeks at a time.

Do that consistently, and the battery under your Trike will still be getting you where you're going long after the packs that got babied on spec-sheet range and neglected on everything else have already needed replacing.
